- Premchand was a famous Hindi writer born in 1880 in Lamahi village near Varanasi. He received his early education in his village. - He became a primary school teacher after passing class 10 and continued studying, obtaining his BA while working. He was then appointed as a sub-deputy inspector of schools. - He wrote 350 short stories and 11 novels. Some of his famous novels are Sevasadan, Premashram, Rangbhumi, Nirmala, Gaban, Karma Bhumi and Godan. He also wrote two plays named Karbala and Prem Ki Vedi.
