The Khilji dynasty ruled parts of South Asia between 1290-1320, after overthrowing the Mamluk dynasty that had previously ruled the Delhi Sultanate. The Khilji were of Turkic origin but had settled in Afghanistan. Jalal-ud-din Khilji seized power in 1290 after orchestrating a coup. He was later overthrown by his nephew and son-in-law Ala ud din Khilji in 1296, who expanded the Sultanate further through military campaigns.
