What is Age-Associated Abnormalities of Water Homeostasis about?

Aging causes distinct changes that impact water homeostasis at multiple locations along the neuro-renal axis responsible for maintaining normal water balance. The net result of these age-associated changes is that older individuals experience a loss of homeostatic reserve, leading to increased susceptibility to pathologic and iatrogenic causes of disturbed water homeostasis. The primary threat to the development of dehydration and hyperosmolality with aging is a reduced sensation of thirst leading to a compromised drinking response in older individuals. The primary threat to the development of overhydration and hypoosmolality with aging is a decrement of maximal water excretion in older individuals due to both renal and pituitary etiologies. As a result of age-associated physiologic changes, older individuals have an increased frequency and severity of both hyperosmolality and hypoosmolality, manifested clinically by and hypernatremia and hyponatremia.
