A jet engine converts liquid fuel into thrust by drawing in air, compressing it, mixing it with fuel and combusting it, then expelling the hot exhaust out of the back. Unlike piston engines which extract power from individual cylinders, jet engines continuously burn fuel in a tube, extracting more energy from multiple turbine stages and producing power more efficiently. This allows jet engines to generate greater thrust than piston engines, enabling planes to fly faster, higher and carry more weight.
