What is Jacob about?

Jacob has a dream at Bethel in which he sees a stairway between heaven and earth with angels ascending and descending. God promises Jacob that he will be with him and will give him many descendants. This establishes a covenant between God and Jacob. Jacob is awestruck by this encounter with God and names the place Bethel, vowing that if God fulfills his promises, the stone Jacob is sleeping on will be God
