This thesis project developed an SMS intercepting demo using a software defined radio and open source software. The demo is able to intercept SMS radio signals, decode them, and decrypt the messages in under 15 minutes using only commodity hardware and open source tools. By intercepting and decrypting a test SMS, the demo aims to show that SMS messages on GSM networks can be easily captured and read, demonstrating the insecurity of using SMS to transmit confidential information such as banking credentials.
