Dr. C.V. Raman was born on November 7, 1888 in Madras (now Chennai), India to R.C. Aiyer and R.C.P Ammal. He obtained his B.A. degree from the University of Madras in 1904 where he stood first and won gold medals in physics and English. In 1917, he was appointed the first Professor of Physics at the Rajabazar Science College under the University of Calcutta.
