The third symphony by Polish composer Witold Lutosławski was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who gave the premiere performance on September 29, 1983 under the direction of Sir Georg Solti. The symphony is scored for a large orchestra including harps, piano, and celesta. At approximately 28 minutes, it has sections that are conducted with precise rhythms as well as ad libitum sections without strict conducting.
