What is The Synthesis of Blockcopolymers by Radical Polymerization about?
## Abstract Polyazoesters are prepared by reacting azoisobutyronitrile with diols. They can be used to prepare blockcopolymers by radical polymerization in a two step procedure. In the first step the polyazo compound is partially decomposed in presence of a monomer to prepared an azogroup‐containing prepolymer. Decomposition of the remaining azogroups in presence of a second monomer result in blockcopolymers containing fractions of homopolymers. Solution and precipitation polymerization are suitable techniques in both steps. The efficiency of the azogroups in the prepolymer is about 0.3. Styrene/methyl methyl methacrylate‐blockcopolymers were obtained in this way. The fraction of blockcopolymers were 60% in solution polymerization and 80% in precipitation polymerization, respectively. Due to termination by disproportionation of methyl methacrylate the blockcopolymer consist mainly of styrene/methyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate/styrene/methyl methacrylate‐blockcopolymers.
