It is an 'introduction' because it assumes no prior knowledge of Swahili, and it is 'active' because in addition to reading the expository material and the examples on the left hand pages, the student is invited to use the self-testing frames on the right-hand pages. These require immediate application of what he has read, and provide a check on his comprehension of it. The Synopsis is closely tied to the lessons that follow it, in two ways. First, the words and many of the whole sentences that appear in the examples in the Synopsis are taken from the early lessons. Second, a grammatical key for each of the first 2r lessons refers the reader to appropriate aragraphs of the Synopsis.
