On November 17, 1862, Third Assistant Engineer George Aiken of the USS Cairo left his post in the engine room to play dominos, neglecting his duties of monitoring steam pressure. Fireman Andrew Lusk noticed the rising steam pressure and was able to locate another engineer to adjust the pressure before an explosion occurred.
