The tear film is composed of mucin, oil, and lacrimal fluid. Mucin is produced by conjunctival goblet cells, oil is secreted by meibomian glands in the eyelids, and lacrimal fluid comes from the main lacrimal gland and accessory glands of Krause and Wolfring. Lacrimal secretions are distributed over the eye surface by gravity, capillarity, and eyelid movement.
