Charles Smith lived in Lord Mountbatten’s shadow for nearly fifty years, sharing his fortunes, his triumphs and his agonies as his valet and butler. He was with him during historic times: in Singapore, where he saw Lord Mountbatten, as Supreme Allied Commander, accept the surrender of the Japanese; in Delhi, when he was proclaimed Viceroy of India; in Malta, where he was Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean; and in many other parts of the world. He was with him during two British coronations; he drove him to Fort Belvedere in Sunningdale when Lord Mountbatten was summoned there to be privately informed of King Edward’s decision to abdicate; and on many other eventful occasions. In 1947, when Lord and Lady Mountbatten had to return to India, Charles Smith was responsible for the running of Broadlands during Princess \ Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s honeymoon there.
