A microscope uses a simple convex lens or system of lenses to produce an enlarged, distinct image of a small nearby object on the retina of the eye. Bringing an object closer increases its angular size at the eye and thus produces a larger image at the retina. A simple microscope, also called a magnifier, interposes a small double convex lens between the eye and object to further increase the angular size without blurring the image. This allows for a clearer, enlarged view of small objects.
