What is Biotechnological Production of Microbial Pigments: Recent Findings about?
Colors play an essential role in our daily-life decisions due to the psychological impact of people, promoting emotions and reactions, and even on purchasing criteria. Even colors are part of life, green color for chlorophylls, red color for blood, and melanin for hair . Since pre-history, humans have used pigments for body painting, cave paints, etc. Most of the colorings in ancient times were extracted from natural sources. Still, the industrial revolution developed artificial color synthesis with a wide variety of shades for application in textile, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutics. Most of the colorings currently used are chemically synthesized. However, markets demand natural-like products, raising the need for natural dyes. These compounds can be obtained from insects, fruits, vegetables, and plants, and also biosynthesized by microorganisms. Natural colorants obtained from plants are an eco-friendly alternative that gradually replaces the chemically synthesized pigments used in diverse industries . However, this source of pigments presents some disadvantages such as seasonality, geographical conditions, climate issues, and low yields . Microbial cell factories are considered
