What is Amoxicillin/clavulanic-acid: Anaphylaxis and medication error: case report about?
Amoxicillin/clavulanic-acid Anaphylaxis and medication error: case report A 69-year-old man developed anaphylaxis during treatment with amoxicillin/clavulanic-acid despite an allergy to amoxicillin. The man, who had coronary artery disease (CAD) status post left anterior descending artery stent and had a history of anaphylaxis to amoxicillin, presented due to upper respiratory symptoms. He was prescribed amoxicillin/clavulanic acid [route and dosage not stated], without the prior allergy (anaphylaxis) identified (contraindicated drug prescribed). Soon after receiving the first dose, he developed acute dyspnoea, throat swelling and urticaria. He was noted to have developed anaphylaxis secondary to amoxicillin/ clavulanic-acid [time to reaction onset not stated].Therefore, the man was hospitalised and treated for anaphylaxis. Subsequently, he developed severe chest pain, and an EKG revealed infero-lateral STEMI, indicating Kounis syndrome triggered by the anaphylaxis. An emergent cardiac catheterisation did not show angiographic CAD. The ST-segment elevation and symptoms completely resolved with time. He was recommended to strictly avoid the penicillins in the future.
