The resulting sound and more especially the intensity of the rebound 'measured' in the wrist provided useful information. It was precisely this measuring principle which at that time formed the basis for the development of a mechanical measuring tle- vice in which thc impact force could be accurately defined by a spring and the rebound read from a scale. Termed the 'SCHMIDT Test Hammer ' (fig.) this instrument made testing history and is embodied in numerous international standards and recommcndations.
