## Growth hormone therapy results in significant changes in body composition, increasing total body water and fat-free mass and decreasing body fat. These early changes, which can be measured by several clinical as well as research techniques, are associated with increases in resting energy expenditure which are only partly explained by the greater metabolic activity associated with increased protein synthesis. There is no demonstrable effect of therapy on physical activity levels. The magnitude of the daily changes in body composition decreases with time and the increase in energy expenditure when corrected per kilogram of fat-free mass returns to pre-treatment levels within three months of starting therapy.
