What is Themes of drama;: An anthology about?

This anthology gives the reader, as far as possible, new plays for analysis. While there would be no point in eliminating Shakespeare, Molière, Shaw, and Pirandello from a text anthology of world drama - indeed, doing so would destroy the book's usefulness - there is no need, either, for offering the same selections from their works. Most teachers should be relieved to find an anthology that does not include Hamlet, Tartuffe, Major Barbara, and Six characters in search of an author. The plays in this anthology are divided into six chief thematic categories of drama. That drama reflects society is a truism. It is quite another thing to prove it. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate how some of the principal themes of drama have changed as the social surroundings in which they were written have changed. In each case, the student should be able to see that the form and content of a play is directly attributable to, and is an index of, the social conditions under which the play was written. This should greatly enhance the book's pedagogic value. (From Preface)
