This study investigates the biochemical conversion of acid-pretreated water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) to alcohol using the yeast Pichia stipitis NCIM3497. The research demonstrates that water hyacinth, a renewable carbon source, can be effectively utilized for alcohol production, yielding 19.2 gm/l of alcohol after 40 hours of fermentation. This approach offers a cost-effective solution for fuel alcohol production while addressing the environmental issue of water hyacinth proliferation.
