The U.S. Air Force converted 29 KC-97G tanker aircraft into HC-97G search and rescue aircraft as the KC-97Gs were being replaced by the KC-135 Stratotanker. The conversions included removing fuel tanks and plumbing to install additional communications equipment, seating, and air conditioning. The HC-97G served as an interim search and rescue aircraft until the HC-130 could be fully deployed, and were used for combat and civilian search and rescue operations until being retired in 1972.
