Mount Baekdu is the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula located on the border between North Korea and China. It is an active volcano historically and culturally significant as the mythical home of Dangun, the founder of the first Korean kingdom, and is claimed by North Korea as the birthplace of Kim Jong Il. The mountain is jointly managed by North Korea and China with political disputes over its ownership among South Korea and Taiwan as well.
