This is accomplished through principles such as ensuring only sterile personnel and items touch the sterile field, keeping unsterile persons a minimum distance from the sterile field, and continuously observing the sterile field to maintain its sterility. Movement and traffic in the operating room should be minimized to limit opportunities for contamination.
