Daisy H. Avellana was a Filipino actor, director, and writer born in 1917. She helped elevate Philippine theater by staging classic plays and encouraging performing groups. Together with her husband, she co-founded the Barangay Theatre Guild in 1939 which popularized theater in the Philippines using radio and television. Some of her notable works include acting in Othello and Macbeth in Black, directing Diego Silang and Walang Sugat, and writing screenplays for Sakay and Portrait of the Artist as a Filipino
