Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare but catastrophic obstetric emergency that can result in sudden maternal collapse. It occurs when amniotic fluid, fetal cells, or debris enter the maternal circulation. AFE is associated with high rates of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.
