French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen discovered the gaseous nature of the solar chromosphere and the element helium by traveling to India in 1868 to measure the solar spectrum during a total eclipse and observing a new yellow line, while English scientist Joseph Norman Lockyer independently observed the same yellow line and named the new element helium.
