What is Temperature Change and the Subsequent Rate of Development about?
The classical analysis of the relation of biological rates to temperature, exemplified by the work of Crozier, promises little useful information in the near future. The criticisms of Burton ('36) among others have shown that any further attempt at a similar interpretation of temperature characteristics must rest on a very complicated theoretical basis (Crozier, '38; Crozier and Wolf, '39). Whatever the validity of deriving meaning from the value of a temperature characteristic, one fact emerges unexplained. Biological rates do deviate from the demands of a simple application of the Arrhenius equation (Hoagland, '36, '37). Such a deviation can be seen at about 18" in the Arrhenius plot of data f o r the development of Rana pipiens (fig. 1). It is even apparent in a rate-temperature plot of the same data (fig. 2) where at high temperatures the empirical curve constantly diverges from the demands of the Arrhenius equation, which are obeyed at low temperatures. Curves of this sort are ubiquitous, at least in the amphibian literature (Krogh, '14; Needham, '31; see also fig. 6 of this paper), and they can be obtained by a rate-temperature plot of the data carefully collected by Moore ('
