Bioaccumulation is the progressive increase in concentration of contaminants in organisms as one moves up the food chain, with higher trophic levels accumulating higher amounts. Heavy metals concentrate more in quaternary consumers than tertiary consumers, and more in tertiary than secondary consumers, due to biomagnification at each trophic transfer. The amount of heavy metals is greatest in organisms at the top of food chains.
