Martinus Willem Beijerinck was a Dutch microbiologist and botanist born in 1851. Through his research on tobacco spot disease, he discovered that the disease was caused by a "contagium vivum fluidum", meaning a soluble, filterable agent that was able to reproduce itself inside living cells. He conducted experiments showing that the agent causing the disease was able to diffuse through an agar plate and still infect plants, demonstrating that it was a liquid and not a particle.
