Biogas is a renewable energy that is produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic waste. It is produced in a biogas plant, or digester, where microorganisms break down organic materials in the absence of oxygen. Biogas contains over 80 genera of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, that ferment organic waste at temperatures optimal for mesophilic bacteria between 30-35 degrees Celsius.
