In teaching undergraduates the importance of anthropology, I have noticed recently a shift in my oppositional ground. Formerly, I taught against a sociobiology that explained cultural differences in what I considered politically suspect terms. Lately, I have begun to counter a textual analysis that reveals these (and other) terms for what they are, but in an involuted manner, obscuring, it seems to me, much of political significance. This book verifies my shift.
