What is Preface about?
In order to promote studies for understanding, engineering and monitoring durability of concrete structures and to exchange the scientific interest and ideas on the updated topics associated with fracture, acoustic emission (AE) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) in concrete, the international workshops have been consecutively held as a series of Kumamoto International Workshops on Fracture, Acoustic Emission and NDE in Concrete (KIFA). This is because concrete structures are no longer referred to as maintenance-free. Thus, great efforts for maintenance of the structures are in extensive demand. To solve these problems, a forum on world-wide research activities in concrete engineering has been organized in cooperation with world-leading scientists. Chronologically, the first KIFA was held in 1998, the second (KIFA-2) was in 2000, and KIFA-3 was held in 2003.
