The esophagus is a tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach. It is approximately 25 cm long and located between the trachea and spine. It has four layers - mucosal, submucosal, muscular, and adventitial. The esophagus receives innervation from the vagus nerve and sympathetic trunk. Embryologically, it develops from the foregut. Diseases that can affect the esophagus include esophagitis, GERD, motility disorders, cancers, and other conditions like esophageal varices or diverticula.
