Much more important, however, are the merits of Anne Scheller's book, which is an impressive testimony to her scholarship and a very good example of how a thorough study of the Old English lexicon may benefit both our understanding of the Old English language and our insight into the cultural transfer that took place in the early Germanic world as a result of the conversion to Christianity.
