The pioneering work of Sargeaunt et al. demonstrated that isoenzyme analysis of cultured amebae could differentiate between Entamoeba species. A zymodeme is defined as a group of ameba strains that share the same electrophoretic patterns for enzymes like malic enzyme, hexokinase, glucose phosphate isomerase, and phosphoglucomutase.
