What is Letters about?
We thank Drs. DeNucci and Frantsve-Hawley for their favorable comments on our commentary in JADA. Clearly, along with JADA editor, Dr. Tim Wright, 1 they share our concerns about the need for updated guidelines for periodontal therapy and, in a more global sense, guidelines for all dental disciplines. Dr. Frantsve-Hawley and colleagues 2 articulated their concerns and vision for guidelines in their excellent JADA article in 2022. In that article and in their letter to the editor, they point out that guidelines are a multistep process incorporating both treatment goals and implementation. As clinicians, we approach guidelines somewhat differently. We feel that the first and most important step in the multistep process of formulating guidelines is to create what we term outcomes guidelines on the basis of sound long-term case management. We have called this step in the guideline process clinical decision points. 3 As we stated in our commentary, all treatment should be patient-centered, as opposed to technique-or implementation-centered.
