Ozone depletion refers to a decline in stratospheric ozone levels and seasonal polar ozone holes. The decline is caused by catalytic destruction of ozone by chlorine and bromine from CFCs and halons emitted at the surface. Increased UV exposure due to ozone depletion is suspected to cause increased skin cancer, cataracts, damage to plants and plankton populations. The Antarctic ozone hole forms during spring when sunlight drives chemical reactions that destroy ozone over Antarctica within a polar vortex. Oz
