This document summarizes a study examining the brains of 100 intravenous heroin users who died between 1995-1996. Of the 100 brains examined, 38 showed some type of cerebral pathology. Twenty-five brains showed signs of hypoxic/ischemic brain injury. Nine brains had pallidal lesions, with six being old lesions, one subacute, and two part of recent generalized hypoxia/ischemia.
