What is Hella: (A Serendipitous Memoir) about?
The catchphrase Hella originated in Oakland, California, and is commonly used in place of 'a lot,' or, 'a hell of a lot.'During the wildly excessive 1980's, Hella became a way of life for Gene. Growing up with his younger brother Joe, life was challenging. Their father numbed himself with malt-liquor and soon disappeared. Their mother was overwhelmed raising two out of control boys, and often spaced out in front of the TV while the boys dreamed of stardom down at the neighborhood baseball diamond. Enter their part-time older brother, a criminally insane institutionalized schizophrenic nicknamed Squeaky. He leads the Brockhoff Brothers on a ten year crime spree throughout the streets of Oakland and Berkeley before turning them on to LSD and other powerful drugs. Bizarre yet hilarious acid freak-outs, car crashes, and the inevitable downward spiral followed.
