What is Quantum Mechanics of Some Simple System about?
The simplest quantum-mechanical systems are the free particle and the particle confined to a finite box, in either one of three dimensions. Solutions of the Schrödinger equation are simple trigonometric functions. But the problem exhibits many of the features of more complex quantum systems, including energy quantization and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The one-dimensional particle-in-a-box provides a simple model for linear conjugated molecules, such as butadiene, while the three-dimensional analog can be applied to the behavior of ideal gases in statistical mechanics.
