Skeletal muscle cells are long, cylindrical cells with multiple nuclei. They contain many mitochondria and myofibrils composed of actin and myosin filaments. Contraction occurs when calcium ions bind to regulatory proteins, allowing the myosin heads to interact with actin and slide the filaments, shortening the muscle. Skeletal muscle cells attach to bones via tendons and are striated due to alternating light and dark bands.
