Rutherford was recommended for and accepted a position at McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1898 to replace Hugh Callendar. This allowed Rutherford to marry Mary Georgina Newton in 1900, to whom he had been engaged before leaving New Zealand. They had one daughter, Eileen. Rutherford received a DSc from the University of New Zealand in 1900. In 1907, he returned to Britain to take the chair of physics at the Victoria University of Manchester.
