Ericsson Mobile Communications AB was a subsidiary of Ericsson focused on developing mobile phones. It was formed in 1989 through a joint venture with General Electric, and eventually became a wholly owned subsidiary of Ericsson. In 2001, during an economic crisis, it was split into two companies - Sony Ericsson, a joint venture with Sony that focused on mobile phone production and design, and Ericsson Mobile Platforms, which focused on software and hardware platforms for mobile phones.
