What is Galla and Somali Origins Reexamined about?

This study by Herbert S. Lewis reconstructs the origins and movements of the Galla and Somali peoples in Northeast Africa, challenging traditional views that place the Galla as the original inhabitants of the Horn of Africa. Lewis argues that both groups originated in southern Ethiopia, with the Somali expanding earlier than the Galla, who began migrating around 1530. The paper critically examines historical references and linguistic data to support this new reconstruction of their histories and movements.
