Joel Chandler Harris is primarily remembered as the creator of Uncle Remus, one of the most beloved and enduring characters in American fiction. Yet Harris made many other significant contributions to American literature, as Paul M. Cousins demonstrates in this revealing study, the first full-scale biography of Harris in half a century. Along with Uncle Remus, Harris created numerous other characters who were authentic representatives of Southern culture in the eras of slavery, secession, civil war, and reconstruction. In his nonfiction writing Harris dealt objectively with the South and argued that its literature should be judged solely on artistic merit. He criticized the regionalism and romanticism which had previously characterized Southern literature, and opened the way for Southern writers to explore their region in realistic terms.
