this article introduces a framework for strategic management of information technology (IT) in global ®rms. The IT/ Geographic Scope matrix addresses how complementaries in organizational con®guration and IT scope bene®t value of products, cost of operations, and overall performance of the ®rm. IT scope captures both the breadth and depth of the ®rm's use of IT in its products, processes, and external interfaces. The framework is applied to 11 ®nancial services ®rms in Hong Kong that deal with international cash management and trade ®nance. Much of the research on business-IT alignment has been on business-IT objectives; the current paper focuses on the complementaries of key ®rm capabilities, namely geographic con®gurations and IT scope.
