Background: The Southeast experienced a major ice storm 12/05-12/10/02. Many residents used inappropriate heating methods to keep warm and subsequently became symptomatic from carbon monoxide (CO) exposure and presented to the emergency department (ED). Study Objectives: To describe the experience of a single ED faced with multiple simultaneous carbon monoxide poisoned patients and to highlight the clinical, systems management and public health lessons learned. Methods: Retrospective case series of patients presenting to a university hospital with CO poisoning during a 5 day period. Electronic registration and medical records were reviewed to identify all patients who presented with the chief complaints of CO exposure or CO related diagnoses. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were abstracted. Results: 197 patients with CO related diagnoses were seen. Patients' ages ranged from 26 d to 62 yrs. 73 (37%) were children under 18 years of age. 132 patients (67%) were Hispanic.
