What is Hybridization and introgression between Callicarpa japonica and C. mollis (Verbenaceae) in central Japan, as inferred from nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences about?
## Abstract __Callicarpa__ × __shirasawana__ is a natural hybrid between __C__. __japonica__ and __C__. __mollis__, and has a morphology that is intermediate between those of the parent species. Characterization of natural __Callicarpa__ populations in the Atsumi Peninsula of central Japan, which all three of the above species inhabit sympatrically, revealed hybrids with various morphologies. Molecular analysis revealed a high occurrence of introgression of the __C__. __japonica__ genome into that of __C__. __mollis__. Moreover, all individuals examined with morphology similar to that of __C__. __mollis__ had genetic traces of hybridization with __C__. __japonica__. Molecular analysis of individual __C__. __mollis__ and __C__. __japonica__ from five other areas of Japan showed that introgression of __C__. __japonica__ into __C__. __mollis__ occurs widely. Molecular data also strongly suggested that the previously recognized __C__. × __shirasawana__ individuals with intermediate morphology are not F~1~ hybrids between __C__. __japonica__ and __C__. __mollis__, but instead are progeny of __C__. × __shirasawana__ backcrossed with __C__. __japonica__. Moreover, it was revealed that ind
