Friendship The importance of friendship to feminist philosopher Rosi Braidotti can be captured in an anecdote she tells about leaving her family's village in Italy, against her will, as a fifteen year old. Born in the decade immediately following the end of the Second World War, Braidotti spent her childhood in a small town not far from the northern Italian border. The extended network of friends and family was large, and she and her friends roamed freely on their bicycles from an early age. Braidotti's grandfather was a leader in the anti-fascist movement, and politics was very often the topic of conversation amongst the adults in her world; perhaps because of this, her early memories include a deep-seated sense of life as a collective project. In Braidotti's fifteenth year, her father's supply business failed and he was suddenly bankrupt. He felt a great sense of shame about his circumstances, and so her parents made an abrupt decision to take up the offer of assisted passage to Australia.
