Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist and journalist born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. He served as an ambulance driver in World War I where he was seriously wounded, an experience which formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms. After the war he lived in Paris as part of the expatriate community and published his first novel The Sun Also Rises in 1926.
